About Us

Gift of Reading is a community initiative of Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.  While previously under the umbrella of the Taman Jurong Citizen’s Consultative Committee (TJCCC), Gift of Reading has recently moved under Tasek Jurong, and aims to inculcate the love of reading and discovery through reading in young children aged three to seven through weekly interactions with our well-trained and dedicated student volunteers.

Pioneered in 2004, this programme is well into its 15th year of continued service thanks to the involvement of committed and passionate volunteers from various secondary schools, polytechnic schools and junior colleges.

Sessions are held twice a week at Taman Jurong Community Club, on Fridays (7pm-8pm) and on Saturdays (2pm-3pm/11am-12pm).  A typical session consists of small group reading sessions where each volunteer will read to a group of 4-5 children, followed by big group activities that are related to a selected theme of the session. These are accompanied with songs and games that are suitable for pre-school children. Occasionally the volunteers will also come together to dramatise a story for the children.  As a whole, these activities serve to cultivate moral values, encourage children to think inquisitively, and build up a child’s confidence so that they can express themselves freely.
